New Academy for Nonprofits Will Provide Training
.........................................................................
Starting in January staff and board
members of southeastern Virginia’s
nonprofit organizations will have a new
option for gaining expertise.
The Academy for Nonprofit Excellence
will offer an array of continuing
education classes through Tidewater
Community College (TCC) to help
nonprofit organizations excel in their
work. The Academy is funded by a $72,000
grant from The Norfolk Foundation and is
administered by TCC’s Workforce
Development Department. On Nov. 4 at 5
p.m., the Academy will sponsor a
kick-off session at TCC’s Norfolk campus
for the heads of area nonprofits.
“It is our philosophy at The Norfolk
Foundation that strong nonprofit
organizations create a strong, healthy
community,” says Leigh Davis, vice
president of community philanthropy at
the Foundation. “In order to train and
grow the best nonprofit professionals,
our region needs a consistent, quality
professional development program.”
The Academy will offer annually 10 two
part courses at TCC’s Norfolk or
Virginia Beach campuses. Topics will
range from strategic planning and human
resources to fundraising, program
evaluation and social entrepreneurship.
Each class will be held on two
consecutive Thursdays and run from 9
a.m. to 4 p.m. The cost will be $65 a
class, and participants will receive
continuing education credits. Those who
complete the series of courses can earn
a certificate in nonprofit management.
