Nonprofits Optimistic, Study Shows
.............................................................................
The outlook for area nonprofits at the
end of 2003 was more optimistic than the
previous year, according to "Dimensions
of Philanthropy in Hampton Roads 2003."
But even with giving trends on the
upswing, area nonprofits are cautious
about spending and are positioning
themselves to thrive in the coming
years.
The second annual survey of 52 area
non-profit organizations focused on
giving trends throughout the region. The
Norfolk Foundation sponsored the survey
along with the Association of
Fundraising Professionals (AFP), Hampton
Roads Chapter. Bonney & Company, a
Virginia Beach market research firm,
analyzed responses from area nonprofits.
The number of nonprofits responding was
double the previous year. Many of them
report cutting expenses in staffing and
programming to make their operations
more streamlined.
For the second year, individual donors
remain the anchors of area philanthropy.
"That's the remarkable thing," says
Angelica D. Light, president of The
Norfolk Foundation. "Individuals
increased their giving in the face of
very poor economic times."
Light presented results of the survey at
a National Philanthropy Day program in
November sponsored by AFP.
