Recent Grants

April 2008 (This cycle focused on capital campaigns and education grants).

Chesapeake Service System, $75,000 to expand a laundry facility in Chesapeake that hires developmentally disabled adults.

The Children’s Center, $67,000 to purchase new computer and telephone equipment for the center that provides child care, therapy and Early Head Start programs for children in Suffolk, Smithfield and Franklin.

Girl Scout Council of Colonial Coast, $50,000 to renovate the bathhouse at Camp Skimino in Williamsburg, which serves girls from throughout Hampton Roads.

Habitat for Humanity South Hampton Roads, $100,000 to support the Home Builders Blitz 2008 home building project in Suffolk’s Huntersville neighborhood. During the week of June 2 local builders and volunteers will build 16 environmentally friendly homes for low-income families.

Holiday House of Portsmouth, $50,000 to build an addition to the Portsmouth residence for children with developmental disabilities.

Hope House Foundation, $150,000 to help purchase apartment buildings in Norfolk and Virginia Beach to be homes for people with developmentally disabilities and low-income citizens.
 
The Planning Council, up to $129,664 over two years to fund a housing specialist to help homeless families find affordable homes in Norfolk.

Suffolk Foundation, $50,000 in seed funding payable over five years to help a new community foundation that serves Suffolk and surrounding areas.

Village Gardens Retirement Housing Foundation, $184,500 to help build a 40-unit apartment complex in Norfolk for low-income adults over age 62. The grant helps fill the gap between $4 million awarded by the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development and the actual cost of building the units in the Lambert’s Point neighborhood. The new apartments will be adjacent to a similar project The Norfolk Foundation helped fund in 2001.

WHRO, $85,775 to upgrade equipment to be used in creating original HDTV programs, including those for the region’s Filipino, African-American and military communities.

December 2007 (This cycle focused on civic engagement, environment and field of interest grants)

Business Consortium for Arts Support, $437,000 to provide grants to more than 30 area arts and cultural organizations.

Chesapeake Humane Society, $45,263 from the Alfred L. Nicholson Fund for animal welfare to purchase surgical equipment for a new Companion Animal Resource and Education Clinic.

Child and Family Services of Eastern Virginia, a $100,000, two-year grant for the Norfolk Family Violence Alliance’s new program for domestic violence victims and their families. The program will provide counseling, an 18-week intervention course, parenting courses and other services focused to prevent a recurrence of family violence.

Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters, $74,825 from the Victor and Ruth N. Goodman Fund for medical research to study sunken chest syndrome in children.

Downtown Norfolk Council, $50,000 to help implement an online marketing initiative to promote arts and cultural offerings in Hampton Roads.

Eastern Virginia Medical School, $23,500 from the Benjamin R. Brown and Charles G. Brown funds for mental health research to study the link between depression and coronary artery disease.

Friends of the Fred Heutte Foundation, $3,500 from the Julian Haden Gary and Margaret Savage Gary Fund for horticulture education to support the Urban Gardener Lecture Series at the Norfolk center.

Hampton Roads Center for Civic Engagement, a $175,000, three-year grant to help encourage area citizens to participate in discussions about important community issues. The new center plans to conduct a survey on the civic health of Hampton Roads, use technology to increase public participation in discussions and hold a regional summit on civic engagement.

The Nature Conservancy’s Virginia Chapter, $145,000 to fund eelgrass and oyster restoration efforts along the Eastern Shore of Virginia.

Norfolk Botanical Garden, $15,000 from the Julian Haden Gary and Margaret Savage Gary Fund for horticulture education to hire additional educators.

Norfolk SPCA, $100,000 from the Alfred L. Nicholson Fund for animal welfare to upgrade the shelter and purchase equipment.

South Hampton Roads Resource Conservation and Development Council, $4,550 from the Julian Haden Gary and Margaret Savage Gary Fund for horticulture education to establish a greenhouse garden for clients of the Western Tidewater Community Services Bureau in Suffolk.

Virginia Beach SPCA, $100,000 to equip a disaster response trailer, upgrade computer equipment and create online programs.

Virginia Network of Nonprofit Organizations, $10,000 to produce a report on the economic impact of the nonprofit sector in Virginia.

Virginia Zoological Society, $9,500 from the Julian Haden Gary and Margaret Savage Gary Fund for horticulture education to create an eco-garden near the education classroom.

 

September 2007 (This grant cycle focused on arts and culture, capital needs and Building Excellence grants)

Arts Enter Cape Charles, $30,000 from the Argyle Fund for lighting and electrical upgrades to the Eastern Shore performing arts center.

Eastern Shore of Virginia Community Foundation, $25,000 for operating support of the new foundation.

Eastern Shore’s Own Art Center, $30,000 from the Argyle Fund to replace windows in the art center in Belle Haven.

Multi-cultural Performing Arts Consulting, $15,000 to purchase instruments and a trailer for the Mosaic Steel Orchestra, which works with Hampton Roads youths. The Norfolk organization uses music to promote diversity as well as personal and professional development.

Old Dominion University Educational Foundation, $200,000 to help renovate and expand the Child Study Center for children ages 8 weeks through 5 years. The Norfolk center trains future teachers and speech pathologists while providing early care and education for 156 children. The expansion will allow the center to work with 60 additional children.

Piano grants: $78,877 from the E.K. Sloane Fund to purchase pianos for Portsmouth Public Schools (Churchland High School), Virginia Opera and the United Jewish Federation of Tidewater.

Southeastern Virginia Arts Association, $16,015 to purchase office equipment for the organization that promotes African-American arts and culture in Hampton Roads.

Virginia Musical Theater, $20,000 to purchase ticketing equipment, wardrobe cases and sound equipment for the theater to use at the Sandler Center for the Performing Arts in Virginia Beach.

Virginia Stage Company, a $5,000 Building Excellence grant for development assistance.

VOLUNTEER Hampton Roads, $2,500 to help support a training conference for Hampton Roads nonprofit organizations.

Young Audiences of Virginia, $33,600 to purchase equipment for a scheduling system and a new phone system for the organization that brings arts programs to Virginia students.

 

June 2007 (This grant cycle focused on health and human services, scholarships and Foundation initiative grants)

Children’s Resources Hampton Roads, $63,466 to upgrade furnishings in five group homes for youths who are involved in area juvenile and domestic relations courts. Children’s Resources serves more than 1,000 youths annually who are from Chesapeake, Franklin, Isle of Wight County, Portsmouth, Suffolk and Virginia Beach.

Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia, $218,000 to upgrade the regional foodbank’s Norfolk warehouse. Last year the foodbank provided more than 10 million pounds of food for 668,000 meals in South Hampton Roads.

Friends of the Portsmouth Juvenile Court, $8,565 to equip expanded office space for the organization that helps Portsmouth children and families involved in juvenile and domestic relations court.

Norfolk Senior Center, an additional $200,000 to help renovate its building for a program that provides care and activities during the day for frail, older adults. The foundation had previously awarded $100,000 for the project.

The Planning Council, $62,640 to hire a housing broker to work with the Norfolk department of Human Services to increase affordable housing for Norfolk residents.

Portsmouth Area Resources Coalition, $26,240 to renovate an emergency family shelter in Portsmouth and purchase computers for the staff.

Virginia Supportive Housing, $300,000 to develop Cloverleaf Apartments in Virginia Beach to provide permanent supportive housing for 60 homeless people from Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth and Virginia Beach.

Edmarc Hospice for Children, $38,070 to purchase new computers and other equipment for Portsmouth headquarters of the regional hospice.

Mercy Medical Airlift, a $25,000 matching grant to help purchase a Virginia Beach headquarters for the organization that provides free medical transportation to people who need to travel for specialized care.

Scholarships, $725,335 to 260 Hampton Roads students attending more than 60 colleges and universities in the fall.

Tidewater Community College, $132,000 to support the Academy for Nonprofit Excellence, which provides ongoing courses for staff and board members of Hampton Roads nonprofit organizations.

Tidewater Emergency Medical Service Council, $54,800 to purchase training equipment for the Norfolk council’s new emergency response training center.

April 2007

Accomack-Northampton Regional Housing Authority, $20,000 for land-use planning for a mixed-income, mixed-use community in Exmore.

Building Trades Academy, a $75,000 matching grant to continue its program that trains economically disadvantaged adults to work in the carpentry, electrical, plumbing and other building trades. The foundation will award $1 for every $2 raised to support the training program.

Catholic Charities of Eastern Virginia, $40,000 matching grant from the William A. and Jane M. Charters Fund to help provide respite care for families caring for relatives with Alzheimer’s disease and other health problems.

Gen. Douglas MacArthur Foundation, $50,000 to help modernize and expand the MacArthur Memorial in Norfolk.

Norfolk Public Library Foundation, $99,840 to purchase computers, printers and furniture for a new computer room and children’s center at the Park Place Library.

Norfolk Senior Center, $100,000 to help renovate its building for a program that provides care and activities during the day for frail, older adults.

Park Place School, $50,000 to renovate additional space to add a class of second-grade students. The private Norfolk school serves elementary students who are struggling in school and come from low-income backgrounds.

Places and Programs for Children, $160,000 to purchase four new buses to transport children attending its Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth and Suffolk childcare centers.

Portsmouth Museums Foundation, $200,000 to help redesign and expand exhibits at the Children’s Museum of Virginia.

Sickle Cell Association, $16,810 to provide funds for computers and telephone system upgrades for the association’s regional office.

Virginia Beach Performing Arts Center Foundation, up to $200,000 to help build the new Sandler Center for the Performing Arts and equip it with a grand piano.

Virginia Legal Aid Society, $50,000 to help purchase a Suffolk office where attorneys provide free legal services to low-income residents.


December 2006

Business Consortium for Arts Support, $426,320 to help provide operating support to more than 30 regional arts and cultural organizations.

Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters, $71,106 from the Victor and Ruth N. Goodman Fund for research into chest wall deformities.

Chesapeake Humane Society, $58,200 from the Alfred L. Nicholson Fund for its spay and neuter program and to put microchips in adopted animals to help identify them if they are lost.

Coastal Virginia Wildlife Observatory, $9,550 to build an addition to a hawk observation platform on the Eastern Shore of Virginia.

Eastern Virginia Medical School, $23,500 for adolescent mental research from the Benjamin R. Brown and Charles G. Brown funds.

Friends of the Fred Heutte Foundation, $3,500 from the Julian Haden Gary and Margaret Savage Gary Fund for the Urban Gardener Lecture Series and the display gardens.

Hampton Roads Naval Historical Foundation, a $50,000 matching grant to build a 5,000-square-foot exhibit about the modern Navy.

The Island Library, $50,000 from the Argyle Fund to help expand a library on Chincoteague Island.

Norfolk Botanical Garden, $163,265 to purchase a biodiesel-powered tram to transport visitors and an additional $15,000 from the Julian Haden Gary and Margaret Savage Gary Fund to refurbish two boats and install signs in the boat basin.

Norfolk Festevents, $30,000 for a portable docking system for tall ships visiting for Sail 2007 and other events.

Norfolk SPCA, $94,800 from the Alfred L. Nicholson Fund for equipment for its veterinary clinic.

Operation Blessing International, a $50,000 three-year grant for seed funding for a mobile dental van to provide free dental services for low-income residents of South Hampton Roads.

Prevent Blindness Virginia, $30,000 challenge grant to help fund training for South Hampton Roads school nurses who screen public school students for vision problems.

South Hampton Roads Resource Conservation and Development Council, $6,000 from the Julian Haden Gary and Margaret Savage Gary Fund to provide gardening containers and supplies for area mental health facilities.

Square One Coalition, $15,000 to implement a strategic plan to provide training to child care workers in Hampton Roads.

Tidewater Pastoral Counseling Services, $45,891 to renovate and equip a new office in Norfolk.

Virginia Arts Festival, $200,000, to help build the Clay and Jay Barr Education Center in Norfolk. The new center will provide offices and rehearsal and educational space for the annual arts festival.

Virginia Beach SPCA, $94,800 from the Alfred L. Nicholson Fund to purchase equipment for its mobile spay and neuter clinic and to update office technology.

Virginia Symphony, $150,000 to purchase percussion instruments, production equipment, musicians’ chairs and a climate-controlled truck for transporting instruments and equipments to various venues throughout Hampton Roads.

YWCA of South Hampton Roads, $142,284 to equip and renovate three homes used as emergency and transitional shelters for women and children. Funds will also help renovate the YWCA’s main office in Norfolk.
