Initiatives


We focus on regional initiatives in three key areas designed to improve:

  • Early childhood care and education
  • Nonprofit leadership and professional development
  • Arts stabilization and audience development

We provide both funding and staff support for the following organizations and projects:

The Academy for Nonprofit Excellence, which started in 2005 with a series of monthly continuing education classes for nonprofit staff and board members. Since then more than 600 area residents from around 300 organizations have taken courses in nonprofit management, and more than 25 have earned Certificates in Nonprofit Management. The Foundation sponsors the academy in cooperation with Tidewater Community College.

Business Consortium for Arts Support, which provides annual operating support for 35 area arts groups. Since 1987 it has contributed $15.6 million to the arts. We helped start the Consortium and are among businesses and foundations supporting it annually. As the Consortium’s largest contributor we also cover all its overhead. For details click here.

The Dimensions of Philanthropy, which is an annual study that provides an annual snapshot of charitable giving in southeastern Virginia. We release the report each November in sponsorship with the Hampton Roads Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals for its commemoration of National Philanthropy Day. Bonney & Company also is a partner in the research project.

Smart Beginnings South Hampton Roads, which is improving early education for all children in southeastern Virginia. Efforts include raising awareness, research, devising a plan to make sure all area children enter kindergarten ready to learn. We helped start this initiative in 2004 and have awarded more than $7 million in grants to support its work.



Your757.com, which is a comprehensive online listing of arts, cultural and other events in Hampton Roads. We helped support the implementation of this online resource in 2008 in an effort to broaden audience support for regional arts and cultural organizations.
