Grant Application Guidelines
Community Leadership Partners and the Beach Fund, grantmaking groups of the Hampton Roads Community Foundation, are pleased to announce their 2010 grant guidelines. The deadline for completed applications was June 21, 2010. Details on applying for funding from either or both groups is below. Please note that the deadline has passed, and grant recipients will be announced soon.
Applicants for Community Leadership Partners grants should be nonprofits working to improve educational outcomes in South Hampton Roads for children between birth and age five. Applicants for Beach Fund grants should be nonprofits working to improve educational outcomes for children between birth and age nine in the Lake Edward neighborhood of Virginia Beach.
Community Leadership Partners Grant Guidelines
About Us
Community Leadership Partners are Hampton Roads civic leaders who unite their resources to improve our community. The Partners award grants to area nonprofits and learn about philanthropy and nonprofit needs while getting to know other community leaders. Each member contributes a minimum of $2,100 annually.
Program Area
In 2010 the Community Leadership Partners fund will support nonprofits working in South Hampton Roads to achieve improved educational outcomes of children birth through age five.
Preferences
The Community Leadership Partners will award grants based on the extent to which the early education program improves educational outcomes for young children by enhancing one or more of the following:
- Quality of the early educational experience
- Effective parenting skills
- Literacy skills of parents with children birth to age five
- Children’s literacy or other cognitive skills
Each program will be assessed by the extent to which it:
- Uses a model that has been proven to be effective
- Has the ability to measure the success of the program
- Is implemented by an organization with a history of working with children birth through age five
Geographic Preference
Community Leadership Partners will accept grant applications from nonprofits that provide program services within any of the five major cities of South Hampton Roads (Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk and/or Virginia Beach).
Community Leadership Partners Awards
Community Leadership Partners anticipate awarding between 10 and 15 grants in 2010. Average size of awards will be between $15,000 and $20,000.
Eligible Organizations
- Nonprofit 501 (c) 3 organizations serving clients within at least one of the following cities: Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk or Virginia Beach.
- Organizations having an established track record of service of at least one year as evidenced by the filing of an IRS 990 form.
Note: Smaller organizations are encouraged to apply.
Eligibility Restrictions
The Community Leadership Partners will NOT fund the following:
- Annual fund appeals
- Support for specific individuals
- Purchases or activities that occur prior to grant decisions
- Deficit funding
- Replacement of government funding
- Lobbying to influence legislation
- Religious activities
- Public schools
- Private elementary and secondary schools
About Us
The Beach Fund introduces Hampton Roads residents to the joy of philanthropy. Members of this charitably minded group are ages 25 to 45 (or young at heart). Each member contributes a minimum of $400 annually and helps set the group’s focus area each year while learning about philanthropy and nonprofit needs.
Program Area
The Beach Fund seeks to support nonprofits working to achieve improved educational outcomes of young children birth through age nine years in the Lake Edward neighborhood of Virginia Beach.
Preferences
The Beach Fund seeks projects that serve young children from birth to third grade in the Lake Edward neighborhood of Virginia Beach. Each project will be considered based on the extent to which it improves educational outcomes for young children by one or more of the following:
- Supports early childhood literacy or parent involvement in their children’s education
- Combines parent literacy, parent education and child-focused instruction as well as providing children with meals and access to preventive health care services
- Uses a model proven effective and has the ability to measure the success of the program
- Is implemented by an organization with a history of serving residents of the Lake Edward community
Geographic Preference
The Beach Fund will accept grant applications from nonprofits that provide program services in the Lake Edward neighborhood of Virginia Beach. (Neighborhood boundaries include Wesleyan Drive and Virginia Beach Boulevard).
Beach Fund Awards
The Beach Fund anticipates awarding approximately three grants. Average size of awards will between $3,000 and $5,000. In addition to the award, Beach Fund members are interested in a one-day, volunteer opportunity for up to 12 of its members at selected grantee programs.

- Nonprofit 501 (c) 3 organizations serving clients in the Lake Edward neighborhood of Virginia Beach.
Note: Smaller organizations are encouraged to apply.

How to Apply for Funding
Application Submission
There is a single application that works for applicants for either the Community Leadership Partners or the Beach Fund.
Applicants applying for grants from both groups for the same program should submit one application only and check the box for Community Leadership Partners Grant and Beach Fund Grant.
Applicants applying for both grants to fund different programs should fill out two separate applications and check the appropriate box for each application.
Note: A grant from either the Community Leadership Partners or the Beach Fund program does not affect the organization’s eligibility to receive other grants from the Hampton Roads Community Foundation.
