Graduate and Medical Scholarships / What's Available


The following is a comprehensive list of scholarship funds for graduate school students administered by the Hampton Roads Community Foundation. Unless otherwise noted applicants must demonstrate financial need. Unless otherwise noted scholarships are awarded only to students from South Hampton Roads. 

Medical School (M.D. Students Only)

Lewis K. Martin II, M.D. and Cheryl Rose Martin Scholarship Fund – For Virginia residents pursuing medical school at University of Virginia School of Medicine.


Drs. Kirkland Ruffin & Willcox Ruffin Scholarship – For students from Norfolk attending Eastern Virginia Medical School. 


Florence L. Smith Medical Scholarship – For long-time Virginia residents attending Eastern Virginia Medical School, University of Virginia School of Medicine or Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine. 

Theological School

Barron F. Black Theological Scholarship– For students at Virginia Theological Seminary (Alexandria, VA) who are candidates for the ministry. Students must be residents of the geographic region served by the Diocese of Southern Virginia.  NOT AVAILABLE IN 2010-2011.

Richard D. and Sheppard R. Cooke Memorial Scholarship – For students at Union Theological Seminary in Richmond who are candidates for the ministry. Preference will be given to students from Norfolk churches within the Presbytery of Eastern Virginia.


William F. Miles – For a student who is preparing for leadership in a field of religious service. Recipients are recommended by Westminster Chapter #99, Order of the Eastern Star.  


Hy Smith Endowment Fund– For students at Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria who are candidates for the ministry. Students must be residents of the geographic region served by the Diocese of Southern Virginia. 

 

Other Graduate Programs

Palmer Farley Memorial Scholarship – For graduate students pursuing the creative brand management track at the Virginia Commonwealth University Brandcenter.  This scholarship is renewable for up to two years.

Victor and Ruth N. Goodman Memorial Scholarship – For students studying medicine or other health professions.


Hampton Roads Association of Social Workers Scholarship – For a graduate student in social work. Recipients can be from anywhere in Virginia. Students are eligible for up to two years of scholarship.  

Hampton Roads Sanitation District Environmental Scholarship – For full-time graduate students from the Hampton Roads Sanitation District service area (Chesapeake, Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, Poquoson, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Virginia Beach, Williamsburg and the counties of Gloucester, Isle of Wight, James City, King & Queen, King William, Mathews, Middlesex and York) studying environmental health, environmental chemistry, biology or civil or environmental engineering at a public Virginia university. Applicants must not be affiliated with HRSD or have relatives who are employees or commissioners. Students are eligible for one year of scholarship support.

Louis I. Jaffe Memorial Scholarship-ODU – For a graduate student at Old Dominion University studying humanities or for a student at any other university studying art history. This is in effect until ODU establishes an art history graduate program. 


Louis I. Jaffe Memorial Scholarship-NSU Alumni – For graduates of Norfolk State University who are enrolled in a graduate program at any institution. Students are eligible for up to two years of scholarship. Applicants may be from anywhere in Virginia. Priority will be given to applicants from Hampton Roads.

Lefki and George Polizos Family Scholarship – For students of Greek descent or students attending Virginia Wesleyan College.  NOT AVAILABLE IN 2010-2011.

Ellis W. Rowe Scholarship – For students from Gloucester County with a preference for students from the York District attending Virginia Wesleyan College or another Methodist college and studying marine science, nursing, ministry, medicine, the humanities, agriculture, biology or other basic sciences.

Enid W. and Bernard B. Spigel Architectural Scholarship – For long-time Virginia residents who are juniors, seniors or graduate students in architecture, architectural history or architectural preservation.  This scholarship is renewable for up to two years.


Most scholarships are available for up to four years of study unless otherwise noted.
Award amounts are based on the amount of available in the scholarship fund, the number of recipients selected and individual financial need. Scholarship amounts are not predetermined.
