Scholarship Information
In 1952 The Norfolk Foundation received
its first scholarship fund. Today it administers more than 50
scholarship funds that are helping more than 260 students
achieve their academic goals. Each fund retains the name of
the donor who created it or someone the donor wished to
honor. In 2007 the Foundation awarded more than $725,000 in

Highlight
 Florence Smith was a Norfolk physician’s daughter who
gave The Norfolk Foundation its first major gift in 1952. A
bequest from her will provided $460,000 for a scholarship
fund for Virginia students attending medical school in the
Commonwealth. Since then the Smith scholarship fund sent
more than 650 physicians to medical school – providing more
than $2.5 million in scholarships. The endowed fund
continues to provide scholarships for students at Eastern
Virginia Medical School, the University of Virginia School
of Medicine and Virginia Commonwealth University School of
Medicine. Smith Scholars have become presidents of the
American Medical Society, the American Academy of
Ophthalmology, International Society of Pediatric Surgical
Oncology and National Foundation for Infectious Diseases as
well as numerous state and regional medical societies. Two
Smith Scholars are missionaries and many teach and conduct
research at medical schools around the country. More than
100 Smith Scholars practice medicine in southeastern
Virginia.
