Other Scholarships


Most of the following scholarships are awarded based upon the recommendation of a third-party or selection committee.  Although the Hampton Roads Community Foundation provides oversight and administers payments, we do not manage the application and selection process. If you meet the basic criteria for one of these scholarships, please contact the recommending agency to find out how to be considered.

John "Max" Bennis Scholarship – For a graduating senior at First Colonial High School in Virginia Beach.  Students must be nominated by school faculty.  We do not accept applications.

Charles F. Burroughs Memorial Scholarship – For students at Union Theological Seminary (Richmond, Virginia). Recipients must be residents of Virginia or North Carolina and are selected by school officials.

Mabel C. Burroughs Memorial Scholarship – For students at Virginia Theological Seminary (Alexandria, Virginia). Recipients must be residents of Virginia or North Carolina and are selected by school officials.

Charles F. Burroughs Memorial Scholarship – The Burroughs Scholarship was established in 1960 with a bequest from the late Charles Burroughs, a founding board member. The fund provides support to students at Norfolk Academy. We do not accept applications. All recipients are selected by school officials.

Stephen A. Carpenter Memorial Fund – For guidance counselors in Norfolk Public Schools who are acquiring additional education related to counseling. Preference is for those with special interest in disadvantaged inner city children. Recommendations are made by the school district’s director of guidance.

George Chamberlaine Memorial Scholarship – The Chamberlaine Fund was established in 1953 by Mabel Chamberlaine Burroughs, in memory of her father, George Chamberlaine, who was treasurer of Norfolk Academy for many years. The fund provides support to students at Norfolk Academy. The Foundation does not accept applications. All recipients are selected by school officials.

Friedrich Ludwig Diehn Fund– The Diehn Fund was created in 1987 by the late Ludwig Diehn, a classical composer and son of a German concert pianist. It provides scholarships for residents of New York attending the New York State Summer School of the Arts, music students at Old Dominion University, and students in the choral program at Tidewater Community College.  We do not accept applications. All recipients are selected by school officials.

R. Franklin and Arbee R. Edwards Scholarship Fund – For students from Isle of Wight County who are attending community college or a four-year college. Recommendations are made by the Historic St. Luke’s Church Scholarship Committee, which uses its own application form.

Everette H. and Edith P. Griffin Memorial Scholarship Fund – For deaf or blind students residing in Isle of Wight County, Southampton County, Franklin or Suffolk, with preference first being given to students in Isle of Wight County. This scholarship is available for primary, secondary or post-secondary education.   Applicants should follow our application process for undergraduate students.  Recipients will be required to submit documentation of medical disability. 

Lewis K. Martin II, M.D. and Cheryl Rose Martin Scholarship Fund – For Virginia residents pursuing secondary education at Salem Academy (Winston-Salem, NC). Applicants should follow our application process for undergraduate students.  This scholarship is also available for students attending Davidson College (Davidson, NC), Salem College (Winston-Salem, NC) or UVA School of Medicine.

John H. and Annie C. Miles Memorial Scholarship – For students from Mathews County, Virginia with a preference for students who have lived, or whose parents have lived, in Mathews County for at least 10 years. Recipients are recommended by Oriental Lodge No. 20. Applications are available in the Mathews High School guidance office each fall.

Margarette H. Old Student and Nurse Educational Fund– For nursing students at Sentara College of Health Sciences. Recipients are selected by the school’s financial aid office.

William A. and Lucille W. Sawyer Memorial Scholarship -- The Sawyer Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 1999 to provide scholarships for students in need of financial aid at Norfolk Collegiate School. All recipients are selected by school officials. We do not accept applications.
