Smith Scholar Testimonials
“Miss Smith gave me some breathing room when I thought I would
smother I debt.”
Dr. Jack Faircloth, EVMS ’99
North Carolina family practice physician
“Your faith and confidence in me, a poor boy from
Lambert’s Point (Norfolk) whose father could neither read nor write,
was an enormous incentive in my unrelenting pursuit of a medical
education.”
Dr. Robert S. Brown, U.Va. ’67
Charlottesville psychiatrist
"As a nursing student and a woman in the late ‘60s,
I was told there was little, if any, chance that I could ever gain
admission (to medical school). I wanted to go more than anything in
the world. That someone would actually pay part of my way was
incomprehensible to me.”
Dr. Barbara Ann Curry, U.Va. ’77
Montana emergency medicine physician
"I had some 18-20 part-time jobs to pay for
college. Then in my senior year Florence Smith came into my life, and
this allowed me to devote full attention to my medical studies…I say a
little prayer to Florence Smith each day.”
Dr. John T. Nuckols, VCU ’67
Retired Fredericksburg psychiatrist.
“The scholarship instilled a sense of philanthropy
and gratitude toward support of education,”
Dr. Donald E. Sly, U.Va. ‘61 (deceased)
Retired Norfolk otolaryngologist
“The scholarship meant the difference between going
to medical school or not going to medical school.”
Dr. Sheldon M. Markowitz, VCU ’68
Retired chief of staff at the VA Medical Center in Richmond
“As a student, the fiscal implications of medical
school can be overwhelming. The Smith Scholarship helped ease my
anxiety and let me concentrate on becoming a physician. For that I’ll
always be very thankful.”
Dr. Marissa Galicia-Castillo, EVMS ‘97
Geriatrics and gerontology professor at EVMS
“Beneficiaries of Miss Smith’s vision have the
responsibility to do our share. This is more than a payback of a debt
of gratitude…This is our opportunity to provide highly motivated and
caring people the means to realize their dreams.”
Dr. Edward L. Lilly, VCU ’61
Norfolk internist.

Candice
A. Gabriel
Candice Gabriel knew at age 7 that she wanted to be a physician.
Her younger brother was injured in a fire and spent several months at
Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters and several years
recovering from his injuries. Because of that “I spent a lot of time
in hospitals as a kid,” the Norfolk resident recalls. “I never said I
wanted to be anything but a doctor.”
Gabriel, who has volunteered at CHKD for several years, is on track to
graduate in 2007 from Eastern Virginia Medical School. She plans to
stay at EVMS for residency in pediatrics.
Gabriel has been helped by a Florence L. Smith Medical Scholarship for
four years. As one of four children whose ages span only five years,
paying for college was a challenge. Her older sister, Noelle, who is
already an EVMS graduate, had received a Norfolk Foundation
scholarship during undergraduate school so Gabriel was familiar with
the Hampton Roads Community Foundation’s scholarship program.
“There is no way I could express how much the scholarship helps me.
Medical school is a huge burden financially,” Gabriel says. “It has
been a Godsend not to max out on my loans.”
